Songlines of Daily Life is a 32-meter aluminum arch stretching across the grassy slope in the newly built neighborhood of Arsta, featuring moving light lines on both the front and back sides.
The artwork showcases an animated light choreography that blends various rhythms from the surrounding environment: city rhythms, such as the different speeds of cars, trams, cyclists, and pedestrians; circadian rhythms related to day and night, waking and sleeping, peaks and breaks; and bodily rhythms like breathing, heartbeat, and blood circulation. These rhythms are not literally recorded but visualized and distorted in a way that merges them into one impression of the activity occurring on the site. The slight curve of the arch refers to the horizon—the vanishing point at eye level that helps us fix our position and merge with our surroundings.
The animation was created in collaboration with Bram Verhavert and the 82 part aluminum was cast at the Westermalms metal foundry in Stockholm.
The work is commissioned by AM Public and Stockholmshem.
